Crochet row counter
A row counter you cannot knock off the arm of the sofa. Yarnova keeps a running count for every project, saves it the moment you tap, and lets you run several counters side by side when a pattern needs them.
Counting rows is the part of crochet that quietly goes wrong. You are twenty rows into a blanket, someone asks what you want for dinner, and the number is gone. Counting back is slow, and on textured stitches it is genuinely hard, because half the point of a good stitch pattern is that the rows blend together.
A physical clicker helps, but it has its own problems. It lives in the project bag where it gets knocked, it only counts one thing, and it has no idea which project it belongs to. If you have three projects on the go, you need three clickers and a good memory.
How a digital row counter is different
The useful difference is not the counting itself. It is that the count is attached to the project and saved without you thinking about it. Put the phone down mid-row, come back on Sunday, and the number is still there.
In Yarnova each counter has a name, a current value, and an optional target. That sounds simple, and for a scarf it is. The parts that earn their place are the ones that handle patterns with repeats.
Intervals, for patterns that repeat
Plenty of patterns are written as an instruction plus a frequency: increase every third round, change color every eighth row, work the cable every sixth. An interval lets the counter do that arithmetic. Set the interval and the counter tells you when you are on one of those rows instead of leaving you to work out whether 27 is divisible by three.
Linked counters, for shaping
Linking is the feature people tend to discover second and then rely on. One counter tracks rows. A second tracks how many increases you have made. Link them, and each time the row counter passes the interval, the increase counter moves up on its own.
This matters on sleeves and yokes, where the instruction is usually a pair of numbers, such as increase every fourth row, twelve times. Without linking you are holding both numbers in your head. With it, you tap once per row and read off both.
Targets, so you know what is left
A count on its own tells you how far you have come. A target tells you how much is left, which is the number you actually want at nine in the evening when you are deciding whether to do one more row. Set the target from the pattern and the counter shows progress towards it.
Counting in the round
Amigurumi worked in a continuous spiral has no visible row line at all, so a counter and a stitch marker together are far more reliable than either alone. Name the counter Rounds, move your marker as you pass it, and the two agree with each other.
Setting up a counter that suits the pattern
A few habits make counters much more useful than a bare tally:
- Name it after the thing it counts. "Rows" and "Increases" beats "Counter 1" and "Counter 2" when you come back to a project after a fortnight.
- Set the target when you start, while the pattern is open in front of you. It takes five seconds then and saves you finding the pattern again later.
- Use one counter per piece, not per project. A jumper's front, back and sleeves each have their own row counts, and merging them is how you lose track.
- Reset deliberately. When you finish a piece, reset rather than starting a fresh counter, so the project does not accumulate a dozen stale ones.
If you are working from a pattern you have added to your library, counters sit alongside the steps for that project, so the count and the instruction are on the same screen instead of in two different apps.
When a counter is not the right tool
Being honest about it: for a plain granny square blanket where you simply work until it looks big enough, a counter adds a step without adding much. Counters earn their keep when a number genuinely matters: garment shaping, matching two sleeves, color changes at fixed intervals, or anything you will need to reproduce later.
They also help when a project is interrupted often. If you crochet in short bursts around other things, the count is the piece of information most likely to get lost, and it is the one that is most annoying to rebuild.
